I'm interested in portrait painting so I bough this book. Unfortunately for anyone wanting to paint "Anglo" women, Hammond only included a lesson on how to paint a profile of a "white" woman. No full-on portrait to be found. Just a side view. That's it, even though Anglos aren't exactly minorities. Completely nutty. It would have been so much better to include a lesson on the entire face, as she did with all the others she included.The author did a great job showing how to paint other skin types and facial features of ethnic people, including men and children, which made the book more complete and more interesting for everyone. As it should be. I thought that was great, glad she did. But can't figure why the only portrait of a "white" female was just a profile or 3-quarter view.
Best book i have found for portraiture in acrylics. Very clear and well illustrated.
I'm a beginning painter and I used this book to paint portraits (from a photo) of my two little girl cousins for Christmas. Granted, I'm not John Singer Sargent, but the paintings came out much better than I expected. This book, with its clear instructions and logical techniques, gave me the confidence to start painting in the first place.
This book has a lot in it . It tells, in detail how to paint ears nose and the eyes . Lots of information , on portrait painting . I feel it helped me a lot I.would like to find a book like this on painting Native American Indians , with the direction and techniques that is in this book . The book was well written and illustrated and since I am new to Acrylics, I found the book quite helpful.The author has several examples and techniques for painting people as well as basic setup and layout of material.The various stages will help anyone seeking to learn the technique and each stage is well detailed. Painting is explained in both color and monochrome examples.In summary, if you require solid fundamentals with examples and explanations, I would recommend this book.
I gave up oil painting years ago. I find this book to have some of the most stunning acrylic portraits.
