I'm suspicious that many of the reviews for this book are fake. Even if a reader was being incredibly generous, they wouldn't rave about a book like this. It has no depth or reveal. Even if you were truly in desperate need of focus, direction, or mental training, you wouldn't read this book and walk away thinking, "Well, boy, I learned a lot!"The book is an embarrassingly amateur read. It's a very light book consisting of a series of "grasshoppa" moments (look up the 1970's TV show "Kung Fu" if that reference is dated). The author simply tells a ton of short stories (very short, as-in 2-3 pages) that are supposed to teach principles. But the stories are childish and the lessons "learned" are totally obvious. "I grew up in the midwest. During the summer, we would visit the ice cream truck. Not only was the ice cream not that great, but I often got an ice cream headache after eating it. Lesson: The mind is your most powerful tool. Treat it well." That example is not a quote from the book, but rather an illustration of the ridiculous "insight" contained in this book.I don't mean to be too harsh on the author, but this kind of fluff writing simply doesn't fly in the 21st century. There have been too many advances in performance, brain development, and neurology to simply tell stupid stories. There isn't a single reference in the book to any scientific studies whatsoever. Furthermore, there isn't even a single footnote or source cited for anything (other than the author's opinion). The book has no forward from any peers in the field of performance or personal development, and no quotes of praise from any authors of similar topics. If you're serious about this subject, check out "Thinking Fast and Slow," "Focus," or any of the books by former Navy SEAL Mark Divine.

This book is a great motivational read with a powerful storyline. The author, DC Gonzalez does a great job presenting a compelling guide into winning at the inner game. I almost read the entire book in one enthralling sitting with its concise, encouraging and actionable style. The stories and examples in the book truly make you look within yourself and examine your own thought processes. It is true that "attitude is everything". I especially enjoyed the stories involving Leo-tai and his mastery level understanding and practice of the mental game. In addition, I relished the parts concerning "imagineering" and how powerful the imagination can be if you apply it in one's life.I also found the story about Pelé to be captivating and demonstrated the potent strategies outlined in the book. It is wonderful to be able to look inside the mind of a champion and see what drives them. What drives them? The answer is passion, self-belief and the will to make it happen! It is true that the inner will reflect on the outer. It is time to let go of fear and doubt and visualize your optimal future for it is a preview of what's to come in your life. To control you mind is to control your life - and the others around you. Dare to be that mental and spiritual warrior! As an avid reader of inspirational and how-to books, I found this a great addition to my Kindle library and I cannot wait to share it with friends. If you want a mental edge, read and put into practice the potent lessons espoused in The Art of Mental Training - A Guide to Performance Excellence. This is an empowering resource for everyone!

Within the first few pages of "The Art of Mental Training," I was struck by the following line: "Whatever is going on inside your head has everything to do with how well you end up performing." And that, really, is the essence of this book. Attitude and self-talk and emotions like fear and anger are far more important than we realize. In sports or in any endeavor. After finishing the book I feel like I can begin to get a better handle on how to turn around what is going on in my head and create a mental environment that will help me excel. Specifically in training for a marathon, but also more generally in dealing with life challenges. The book presents a series of concrete and easy to understand tools for changing negative thoughts and creating the right mental space for winning. Told in a series of vignettes from the author's own experiences as a mental training coach, Navy pilot, law enforcement officer and athlete, the tools are simple, but many are profound. They will take practice and, most importantly, a decision to create the right attitude, but all of the needed skills are here. The format and writing style of this book are unlike any I've read on mental readiness and performance, but they make the lessons the book contains easy to grasp and put into practice immediately. This is a truly valuable resource for anyone who wants to learn how to take his/her performance to the next level.

Learn the essentials of sport psychology and apply it to your own life. Whatever you do or wish you could do can be realized using these explicitly detailed rules for personal growth and success. The author introduces the reality of success by living the essential beliefs explained here. This book is the handbook for successful human living. Whether you are an aspiring athlete or an English major this book can help you realize your dreams. If you aren't sure what your dreams are yet, the exercises within will help you know and grow them. The book is well written and organized to help you achieve your goals. Enjoy!
